Workshop: Manodharma Sangeetham by Guru Sri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan
Transitioning to Manodharmam is one of the most challenging tasks for students of Carnatic Music.
We believe that an intense group environment will help them in the learning process.
We discussed this idea with Guru Sri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan and he has graciously agreed to conduct this workshop.
Dates: July 18 Ė Aug 1, 2014
Location: The workshop will be conducted in Chicago.
Participants outside Chicago are welcome to attend in Chicago or participate via Video Conference.
Participants will be divided into groups of up to 8 depending on their levels
Each group will focus on a set of Raagams as per their levels
In each class the group will train on Alapana, Neraval, Swaram and thaanam.
Pallavi (as in Ragam Thanam Pallavi) will be used for the purpose of the training OR if there is a common kriti known to the group, the kriti will be used. Guru may also ask for a set of kritis to be learnt in his style for the purpose of manodarmam training prior to the workshop.
Each group will have 2hr 30mins of classes every day with the Guru broken down as 1:15 in the morning and 1:15 in the afternoon.
Each group will have practice sessions with a peer-leader who will guide them in the improvisation.
During the 2nd week of the workshop, the students will perform for 15 minute with Accompaniment for the Guru / peer review.
Will Guru take the participant as a student?
- NO. Guru does not have time to handle any new students. Student will continue their learning with their current Gurus. The workshop is intended to transition the student to manodharmam in an intense group setting.
Will Kritis be taught? If so, what is the impact on my own teacherís style / Bhani?
- Kritis will not be taught.
- Pallaviís will be used for the purpose of manodarmam
- Depending on the level of the group, Guru may require a few kritis to be learnt in his style for the purpose of Manodarmam.
Can a teacher participate in the session?
- Yes the teacher of the student is welcome to attend the sessions.
- If the teacher brings 8 students for a batch, they can customize the session to their needs.
Interested students will send a recording or links to their recent renditions to
Guru Sri Neyveli Santhanagopalan will review the recordings and determine if the student can benefit from the workshop. He may call the student to discuss if he so decides.
Students from out of Chicagoland area need to let us know if they would require host families for their children. There may be a small fee for hosting that will be paid to the host family directly. The host families may not be able to accommodate adults.
